Frankfurt’s Carnival Parade
A view sidebars of today’s carnival parade in Frankfurt that drew a crowd of about 300,000 revellers (Feb.15), although Frankfurt isn’t actually a carnival hotspot in Germany. Rose Monday parades in Mainz, Düsseldorf or Cologne are usually attended by about one million people each. -

The Old Opera House

Frankfurt’s Alte Oper (Old Opera House), built between 1873 and 1880, is seen from above on a gray and hazy day, Feb.12. In 1937, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana was performed here for the first time. The building was almost completely destroyed by allied bombs in 1944. In the 1970s it was slowly rebuilt and eventually reopened in 1981. Alte Oper is now a concert hall.
