Warm Winter – Early Bee
A bee in search for pollen among crocuses at Frankfurt’s Lohrberg hill, Feb. 16.. Winter in this part of Germany has been unusually mild so far and bees are swarming out very early.

A leafcutter ant carries a small piece of leaf along a twig, only to discover that it will have to make a U-turn in order to reach the ant nest at the Frankfurt zoo, Feb.14.

Leafcutters
Leafcutter ants go along their business at the Frankfurt zoo, Feb.14. Interestingly, they just don’t eat the leaves (something I believed in for a long time), but process them instead and use them as a substrate for cultivating a fungus which they eat . This requires a highly developed social structure.
