Birdwatching: Bramblings in a Snowstorm
Today, I went birdwatching (in a snowstorm) for a change. About one million bramblings (Fringilla montifringilla, or Bergfink in German) congregate every evening near the village of Steinbach, some 60 mls north of Frankfurt, to throng the trees and spend the night here. They currently find plenty of beech seeds in the woods of the surrounding Westerwald and Taunus hills, escaping the northern winter of their Scandinavian homes. Dozens of locals and bird lovers come to watch the daily invasion.
