
A visitor is reflected in the glass that protects the fossil of a turtle, roughly 45 million years old, on display at the Messel Pit (German: ‘Grube Messel’) exhibition hall, just southeast of Frankfurt, Sep.2. The disused quarry with its abundance of fossils was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site almost 20 years ago.

Laurel Forest

The laurel forest at the Garajonay National Park along a hiking trail on La Gomera, Canaray Isands, Spain, March 18. The forest is one of the largest continuous areas of laurel forests in Europe. It was declared World Heritage by the Unesco.
