An actor’s portrait
German actor Ulrich Tukur, sitting on an old Land Rover in his 1950s-style suit at the Frankfurt zoo, May 8. He stars in a tv movie that is currently being filmed here on the life of late zoo director Bernhard Grzimek [1909-1987], who was also a popular tv character in Germany at his time.
Make a U-Turn
A leafcutter ant carries a small piece of leaf along a twig, only to discover that it will have to make a U-turn in order to reach the ant nest at the Frankfurt zoo, Feb.14.
Leafcutters
Leafcutter ants go along their business at the Frankfurt zoo, Feb.14. Interestingly, they just don’t eat the leaves (something I believed in for a long time), but process them instead and use them as a substrate for cultivating a fungus which they eat . This requires a highly developed social structure.
Same Pattern
A five day-old giraffe named Katja and its mother at a zoo in Kronberg, just outside Frankfurt, Jan.7. It is actually a Rothschild’s giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi), considered one of the most endangered subspecies. They usually live in very few locations in Uganda.
Young and Old
A Bonobo baby’s hand on the belly of its mother at the zoo, June 23. (Did I mention I like taking pictures of animals?)
